Safer Internet Day at Oxford

Safer Internet Day (SID) is celebrated every year on February 11th to raise awareness about the importance of staying safe, responsible, and ethical online. At Oxford, it’s a chance for staff to take a step back and think about their own digital habits, while also picking up some tips for creating a safer online environment for everyone in the academic community.

This day is a great opportunity for Oxford staff and students to brush up on cybersecurity risks and learn how to protect both personal and University information in today’s digital world.

Here are five key principles for staff to keep in mind:

1. Data Protection and Privacy
Keeping academic, student, and staff data safe is a top priority. It’s important to follow privacy guidelines, use strong and unique passwords, and make sure we handle records and research data securely. Following data protection laws like GDPR helps build trust and keeps sensitive information safe.

2. Promoting Digital Literacy and Critical Thinking
As part of the Oxford community, staff play an important role in helping students become savvy digital users. By encouraging them to critically assess what they see online, spot fake news, and evaluate sources, we can all help students navigate the web more safely. This promotes better decision-making and reduces the spread of misinformation.

3. Cybersecurity Awareness
We all need to be aware of cybersecurity risks, like phishing scams, malware, and ransomware. Regularly updating software, keeping up to date with the information security training, and using secure networks will help keep the University’s systems, networks, and personal devices safe from potential threats.

4. Responsible Online Communication
With more communication moving online, it’s important for staff to lead by example. This means being respectful, professional, and kind in emails, virtual meetings, and online forums. A positive online culture helps avoid cyberbullying and other harmful behaviours that can arise in digital spaces.

5. Collaboration for a Safe Digital Environment
Making the internet a safer place is something we can all help with. By working together with colleagues, students, and IT teams, we can create better digital safety policies, report threats, and encourage a culture of cybersecurity across campus. Staff involvement in safety campaigns helps create a safer and more responsible online community.

At Oxford, staff have an important role in creating a secure online environment—not just for the university, but for the wider academic world. By taking part in Safer Internet Day, we can help build a culture of digital safety and responsibility.

With online threats always evolving, it’s essential that we all stay informed and equipped to navigate the digital world securely. By following these principles, Oxford staff can continue to lead by example, helping to build a safer, more ethical internet for everyone.
